Hedin Named as New Director of Undergraduate Program

Effective Feb. 1, 2010, Lars Hedin, Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, will assume the role of Director, Program in Environmental Studies (ENV) at Princeton Environmental Institute. Hedin replaces David Wilcove, who held the position from 2006 – 2009.

Hedin is an internationally recognized expert on conservation and ecology. He is a member of PEI’s Faculty, Grand Challenges Faculty and PEI’s ENV Interdepartmental Committee. He co-teaches (with David Wilcove) the Environmental Studies Program core course ENV 2O1: Fundamentals of Environmental Studies: Population, Land Use, Biodiversity and Energy.

The Program in Environmental Studies (ENV) curriculum is multidisciplinary, and focuses on the scientific, political, humanistic, and technological aspects of environmental problems. Through the ENV program, students majoring in any department can pursue their interests in the environment, and design a course of study that is consistent with their interests.

Students who complete all of the requirements for the ENV Program will receive a Certificate in Environmental Studies. In 2010, nearly 50 undergraduates are expected to receive Certificates in Environmental Studies. These undergraduates represent 16 academic departments, with balanced distribution in the science/engineering and social sciences/humanities disciplines.
