Ocean Spray Aerosol Emissions: From Salt to Microplastics

Luc Deike, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and the High Meadows Environmental Institute, will present “Ocean Spray Aerosol Emissions: From Salt to Microplastics.” Deike was the first speaker in the fall 2023 HMEI Faculty Seminar Series.

Ocean spray aerosols are tiny water droplets and solid particles (from tens of nanometers to hundreds of microns in size) that are emitted at the ocean surface by wave breaking and bubble bursting during storms. Ocean spray aerosols provide a pathway to transfer salt, biological material, or microplastics from the ocean into the atmosphere, affecting the climate system through the radiative balance and the formation of clouds. In this talk, Deike discussed the processes responsible for ocean spray aerosol emissions, from large wind and ocean waves scales to the drops and bubbles scales, and how to predict sea salt and microplastic emissions from the ocean.
