PEI Faculty Seminar: “Eco-Swarāj: Can India Achieve Environmental Self-Rule?”
Meera Subramanian, the 2019-2020 Currie C. and Thomas A. Barron Visiting Professor in the Environment and the Humanities in the Princeton Environmental Institute, presented “Eco-Swarāj: Can India Achieve Environmental Self-Rule?”
Subramanian, an environmental journalist, explored India’s environmental future through the stories of the people documented in her book A River Runs Again who are determined to revive their landscape and improve their lives. Drawing on her travels across the country, she discussed whether their work can help India create a new model for sustainable development at home and for the world, and if their work can survive in a faltering democracy.
Anu Ramaswami, the Sanjay Swani ’87 Professor of India Studies, professor of civil and environmental engineering and the Princeton Environmental Institute, led a discussion and Q&A with the audience after the main presentation.
