Energy, Prices and the Influence of Middle East Oil Producers

Speaker: Bernard Haykel, Professor of Near Eastern Studies, Princeton University

This talk will explore the role and power of the Arab countries of the Persian Gulf, especially that of Saudi Arabia, in the world’s energy markets and the geopolitics of the region. In addition, the talk will assess the tentative plans and projects of the Gulf countries in the areas of renewable and alternative energy sources (e.g., MASDAR, KAPSARC) and whether these will survive the present downturn in oil prices and declining national revenues. The potential implications of the size of the energy resources in the Middle East on the US energy policies will also be discussed.
