To help for a more concrete view of the HMEI-CESEn Fellowship expectations, we present illustrative examples of projects that could be performed with the HMEI-CESEn advisor, as part of the advanced paper requirement (projects are not limited to such configurations).

PROJECT EXAMPLE 1:

Getting into environmental/climate sciences and engineering

  • A MOL-BIO PhD student is interested in applying DNA sequencing techniques to climate issues and applies to work with an HMEI-related faculty.
  • A Physics/Astro PhD student wants to move towards climate sciences and applies to work with an HMEI faculty with expertise in climate science/climate modelling.
  • A Computer Sciences PhD student, having developed machine learning techniques, wants to apply them to environmental issues, climate impact questions, modeling development and comes to work with an HMEI-related faculty.
  • An ANT student, studying cultural impacts of storm surges, wants to develop understanding into the dynamics of storm surges during extreme events relevant to their area of study.

PROJECT EXAMPLE 2:

Bridging the scales/developing a new methodology or perspective

-A GEO or EEB PhD student, working on climate and disease, wants to understand the small- scale fluid dynamics aspects of the problem and gets to work with a fluid dynamics expert in engineering.

-A MAE/CEE PhD student, working on a subset small scale problem of the climate system, wants to look at the large scale/long term impacts and gets to work with a HMEI climate expert.

-A MOL-BIO PhD student wants to move towards ecology.
