Student Work: Clean Water for Peru

With support from PEI, the Princeton chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB-PU) traveled to La Pitajaya, Peru, to construct the first phase of a potable water system. The community currently gets their water from a large river in the area that unfortunately has become significantly polluted from villages upstream. Therefore, the EWB-PU team and La Pitajaya residents plan to construct a system to pipe clean drinking water from a mountain source to both the upper and lower parts of the town.

Four graduate students have been awarded 2013 PEI-STEP Environmental Policy Fellowships by the Princeton Environmental Institute (PEI). Among recipients are: Stephanie Debats and Xinwo Huang from civil and environmental engineering, Aahana Ganguly from chemistry, and Geeta Persad from atmospheric and oceanic sciences.

On Friday May 10th, the Princeton Environmental Institute (PEI) hosted Discovery Day 2013 - a multidisciplinary poster session celebrating undergraduate senior thesis research on a wide variety of environmental issues. Over 80 students from 19 academic departments showcased their work which was mentored by 58 faculty Advisers.

Colvin Winner Abby Hewitt ’13 Examines Environmental Conservation in Rural Costa Rica

In May 2012, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology major Abby Hewitt ‘13 received the Becky Colvin Memorial Award. During the following summer, Hewitt used the Colvin funds to examine social and economic factors influencing environmental conservation in rural villages in Costa Rica. Her thesis, “Land Use Dynamics on Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula: A Model for Balancing Ecological, Economic, and Social Integrity,” was based upon findings from that work.
